A New Ground 02:21
For Maupai 01:52
Lifesaver 03:35

From the Ground is the debut album released in 2015 in Europe by Naomi Berrill, a young Irish cellist and singer based in Italy. Naomi takes us on an eclectic journey from the Baroque style of Henry Purcell to the contemporary melancholy of Nick Drake. Her delicate voice and subtle arrangements weave seamlessly across genres, creating an original and intimate sound which is as much at home in the Romanticism of Schumann and Debussy as in the folk songs of Pete Seeger.
Naomi’s musical life began in Galway, on the west coast of Ireland, where her parents run a small music school. Her studies have brought her to many countries including Scotland, Canada, Holland, Italy and Switzerland. Her early exposure to many styles of music from Irish Traditional and Classical Music, to Jazz and Popular Music has helped to develop her unique imprint as a performing artist. Recently Naomi has collaborated with Virgilio Sieni (Director of Dance Biennale Venice), the New York City Ballet, the writer Stefano Benni, and the cellist/composer Giovanni Sollima.
The title ‘From The Ground’ reflects Naomi’s fresh and natural outlook which can be heard in her performances. The CD contains 13 original settings and also includes ‘For Maupai’ a song written by Naomi’s friend, the jazz musician Almut Schlichting.

Naomi was born in Galway, Ireland in 1981. Her parents, both music teachers, played a fundamental role in her development as a musician. In 2000 she moved to Glasgow to study classical cello with Robert Irvine at the Royal Conservatory of Scotland as well as electroacoustic composition, traditional scottish music, and piano.

In 2005 Naomi gave her inaugural performance as a soloist playing Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations with the RCS Orchestra. After graduating she continued cello studies in Italy with Enrico Bronzi and Francesco Dillon at the Fiesole School of Music, Florence.
Later in the same year she embarked upon a collaboration with Musicamofrosi, a music and theatre events company based near Milan. In 2010 Naomi founded ‘High Notes’, an annual multi-genre music festival which takes place in the Apuane Alps.

Currently, Naomi’s solo work involves a diverse repertoire performed on a variety of platforms from folk festivals to classical chamber music programmes and noted jazz events. She has collaborated with contemporary dance choreographer Virgilio Sieni, performing at the Biennale Danza in Venice and composing original music for a number of his projects. Noted Italian cellists Giovanni Sollima and Mario Brunello have invited her to perform on various occasions including the 100 Cellos Festival in Rome and Milan. She has worked with other artists and groups including Stefano Benni, Arvo Part, Bill Viola, The Crash Ensemble, The Scottish Chamber Orchestra and The New York City Ballet.

また、Stefano Benni(ステファノ・ベニ /イタリアの作家)、Arvo Part(アルヴォ・ペルト /エストニア生まれの作曲家)、Bill Viola(ビル・ヴィオラ /アメリカ生まれのビデオ作家)、The Crash Ensemble、スコットランド室内管弦楽団、The New York City Balletなどのアーティストやグループと仕事をしています。
