“Vihmakõnõ” is Kalkun’s second album, dedicated to her grandparents. This album is more personal than her 1 st album and moves closer towards minimalism and experimenting with sound/sounds. The album is recorded at various locations in home environments using a lot of piano sounds.
北欧、バルト海沿岸の小国エストニアの女性SSW、マリ・カルクン。彼女の力強く、素朴で澄んだ歌声がピアノ、アコーディオン、ギター、そしてカンネル( エストニアの民族楽器) の惹き込まれそうな独特の響きとともに、北欧の大地に響きます。まっすぐで、一人一人の心の中に直接語りかけてくるような、音楽への強い信念を感じる作品です。
■Profile
Mari Kalkun is a musician, singer and a composer relying on her Southern Estonian roots. The songs are largely her own compositions, inspired by nature, Estonian poetry and folk music. Many of the lyrics are written by local poets carrying the feeling of rural life, the forests, the landscape. The flowing sound of Estonian language and its dialects create a meditative atmosphere in her music intertwined with the traditional singing – regilaul - and folkore. For making music and accompaning herself she uses kannel, piano, accordion, guitar but sometimes also pipes, whistles and various experimental instruments.
私の母はエストニアのバルト海に浮かぶキフヌ島という島に生まれました。そこではいまだに女性が 普段から昔ながらの民族衣装を身にまとって暮らしているようなところです。父はエストニアの南部、 ラトビアと国境近くのヴォル県の生まれです。ヴォル県では所謂エストニアの一般的な言葉とは異なる 発音やリズムの方言が強く残っています。世界を巡ってツアーをしていると、自分の根源的なルーツ がこの二点にあることを強く感じます。私の歌の歌詞のあるものは、第二次大戦の頃にヴォルの詩人 によって書かれたものです。それらの詩は 1940 年、50 年代の郊外や森、都市に暮らす人々の生活に まつわるものですが、大きく時代が変わっても、私に強い共感をもって語りかけてきます。その他の エストニアの詩人の書いた詩、自分自身による歌詞においても、親友や家族といった、「身近でより近 しい存在について捧げられるものである」、という点を意識しています。私は” 完璧な音楽” というも のを信じません。私にとって音楽とは、非常に個人的なものであり、過去の詩人や、また私の歌を聴 いてくれる多くの人々と一緒にすべてのことについて率直に語らう場所であるのです。
