sm.noise When it's time to relax and I need something else to zone out to other than heavy guitar drones, this is what I listen to. I can imagine looking out over Shinjuku while rain pours down across the city. Despite the rain you can still hear and feel the pulse of the city. It all mixes together in a sublime blend of dreamy sound that does it for me every time. Favorite track: cloud over.

This is the first record from Detroit-based Rod Modell (Echospace, DeepChord) on the Plop label. Modell is a classic minimal techno producer and also founder of Deepchord Records in Detroit as an outlet for his "dirty" minimal tracks. Incense & Black Light is an intoxicating journey into darkness, a sonic travelogue through one mysterious night. The tracks represent 10 different scenes from the same night, taking the listener from dusk to dawn. A rainy, neon-lit trip into the seedier side of night temples, red light districts, and opium dens. Psychedelic dub-delays, sub bass, and slabs of alien atmosphere rule here. Otherworldly rainy-night field recordings saturate the tracks. Modell began producing music in the mid-'80s using analog synthesizers and drum machines. To date, Modell has about 60 releases to his credit. Rod's work was focused on electro-acoustic experimentation in the early years, making musique concrŠte compositions with a 4-track cassette machine and field recordings, then branching into industrial soundscape work. More recent recordings utilize more structure and beats, but still retain the atmospherics that Modell is known for. Mood is of paramount importance in a Rod Modell recording (often created with field recordings). One of Modell's favorite pastimes is making middle-of-the-night music with his portable DAT machine and dummy-head microphone. Incense & Black Light is ideal for 3:00AM headphone listening.

ECHO SPACE, DEEP CHORD

Rod Modell aka Deepchord is an electronic music producer from Port Huron, Michigan. He worked with Mike Schommer to produce music under the Deepchord moniker as well as create an eponymous record label; however, currently the project name of Deepchord represents only Modell, who is using a number of aliases besides. The musical style of Deepchord is similar to both the minimal Berlin sound of artists like Basic Channel and the techno tradition of Detroit. Modell might be best known for his collaboration with Stephen Hitchell (Soultek) as Echospace or cv313. In 2007, they released the album The Coldest Season on the record label Modern Love. Modell has also performed live with Hitchell as Echospace and has also collaborated with fellow Detroit native Mike Huckaby.
